Training and qualifications in Australia

In order to spread the  Dalcroze  work throughout Australia, we need teachers who understand the philosophy and who are competent to incorporate it within their profession as well as those who train to become Dalcroze teachers.

There are four levels:

Level 1
- (Foundation)
Introduction to Dalcroze

Level 2
- (Intermediate)
Entitles the holder to incorporate Dalcroze within his/her profession  (formerly known as the Specialist certificate).

Level 3
- (Certificate)
The Dalcroze Certificate entitles the holder to teach beginners (children or adults) and to call him/herself a Dalcroze teacher.

Level 4
- (Licentiate)
The Licentiate entitles the holder to teach Eurhythmics at an advanced level such as in a university or conservatorium.

In Geneva  the training required to obtain a Licentiate is four years of full-time study. In this country, many people come to Eurhythmics after completing a three or four year degree in music and our training recognises this experience and tends to concentrate on those areas which are not included in many music courses, namely movement and improvisation.

As there is no full-time course available for Dalcroze studies in Australia, the only way to gain qualification is through attendance at Summer Schools and Workshops.  For this reason it is essential for a candidate on a training track to  keep a register of all courses attended as well as a journal of lessons done.  Those who apply to do the training need to be able to provide adequate evidence if they wish to seek recognition of prior learning.

It is not possible  to say how long it takes to do a certain level as this depends on previous general experience in music, movement and  improvisation and overall suitability for the work.  A candidate's  application to take an exam is subject to the approval of teachers  who have had a chance to observe responses across a range of  music and movement activities.

International Dalcroze Teacher Training
Dalcroze Teacher Training to Licentiate level is available at several universities and conservatoria, world-wide. In the English-speaking world there are major training centres in Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, London and Manchester. Most of these schools offer some form of financial assistance for International Students. For further information on these courses, click Colleagues, then Dalcroze Schools.

The Dalcroze Diploma

The Diplôme Supérieur' is the highest award in Dalcroze Teacher Training. It is rarely awarded outside the Jaques-Dalcroze Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. It endorses the holder as a master teacher and examiner. It permits the holder to train and examine others to Licentiate level. This course is usually presented in French.
